Automotive cockpits are becoming increasingly intelligent and complex. Forvia’s mission is to create holistic systems in which all its key products interact together to improve the user experience and HMI. \nTo address the interior system complexity\, Forvia developed a bespoke modeling and simulation approach based on “model-based System Engineering” (aka MBSE). The world’s major cities have set out to leverage new technologies to realize their vision of a more sustainable future. If you take a closer look at today’s debate on future mobility concepts\, it’s cities for humans first\, and vehicles (only where necessary) second. However\, ideas for smart cities cannot be realized without smart\, future-oriented mobility solutions – from shared services to car subscription models. New players (not necessarily start-ups\, though) are entering the market\, targeting the young\, progressive urban customers of tomorrow. Despite people returning to private cars during the pandemic\, they are looking for both cheap and sustainable mobility solutions. A great window of opportunity has opened for traditional carmakers: with efficient and sustainable solutions for e-mobility\, connected/shared mobility\, data services\, and automated driving\, they have also set the stage to shape the future of smart cities. But how is that momentum used for communication and marketing\, and how can it be used to create opportunities for a strong public positioning? What is the customer looking for and what is driving the media discussion? \nCarla Bailo\, President & CEO at CAR\, and Silke Nehlig\, SVP Sector Lead Mobility at UNICEPTA\, will present data-driven insights on: \n\n Public perception of mobility solutions in the context of smart cities\nWhich brands are most impactful? How are they perceived in the public?\nWhat’s next? This crystallizes itself in four distinct digital vehicle trends: autonomous\, connected\, electrified\, and shared vehicles (ACES). Over-the-air updates continuously enhance and improve vehicles that have already left the factory. New use cases and intelligent behavior are enabled by vehicle-to-everything (V2x) communication. Linux\, containers\, and other state-of-the-art cloud-driven technologies are gaining traction in the automotive industry due to open source’s success. In the trend towards the Software-Defined Vehicle\, solutions are developed reaching from the vehicle to the cloud with an integrated DevOps approach. Software\, data\, hybrid cloud architecture\, edge computing\, and artificial intelligence are key competencies to fulfill the ACES requirements. This webinar will present an overview of essential drivers\, edge technologies\, initiatives and share our perspective of the Software-Defined Vehicle. \nPanel Host: Carla Bailo\, President & CEO\, Center for Automotive Research\nPanelist: Harald Ruckriegel\, Automotive Vertical Chief Technologist\, Red Hat URL:https://www.cargroup.org/event/the-software-defined-vehicle-key-drivers-technologies-and-open-source-initiatives/ LOCATION:MI CATEGORIES:CAR Event END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20220322 DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20220324 DTSTAMP:20240114T231456 CREATED:20220301T200946Z LAST-MODIFIED:20220301T201035Z UID:45816-1647907200-1648079999@www.cargroup.org SUMMARY:Durable Automotive Plastics Circularity Working Meeting 2022 DESCRIPTION:The automotive industry has grown significantly during the last decade\, with the total number of registered vehicles in developed countries growing consistently by on average 4% per year. [1\, 2] The global automotive industry was valued at $3.6T in 2021\, even considering the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. [3] However\, the automotive sector generates 5% of global industrial waste which if not handled properly can be classified as hazardous waste. [2]  Recycling of end-of-life vehicles at shredder plants ends up with huge amounts of waste residue\, for which the complex recycling route is still missing. Automotive shredder residue (ASR) is often called light fraction\, because after the separation of all the metal particles it contains mostly non-metallic materials like plastics\, rubber\, wood\, paper\, textile\, leather or glass – a complex mixture of materials known as automotive shredder residue (ASR). To enable circularity for ELVs\, the environmental and economic benefit of recycled material content must be quantified\, and separation and sorting pathways must be developed and industrialized. To do so\, several questions will need to be answered: \n\nWhat are the options to eliminate disposal of ELV durable plastics\, such as composites\, and ASR?\nWhat is the potential environmental and economic value of currently unrecycled vehicle content?\nIn addition to technical challenges\, why isn’t recycling yet at cost parity with landfilling?\nWhat is the U.S. DOE’s perspective on this problem and what do they plan to do about it?\nWhat are people doing about this right now?  What solutions exist?\nWhat known and forthcoming barriers exist to recycling of durable plastics in automotive?\n\nTechnical barriers (i.e.\, durable plastics in ELVs aren’t designed to be recycled)\nSupply chain limitations (i.e.\, not yet enough waste to supply any significant industry)\nInfrastructure limitations (i.e. lack of sorting\, separation\, recycling facilities and collection solutions)\nOthers\, to be identified in the meeting\n\n\nWhat are the capabilities of ACC members\, automotive and industrial stakeholders\, national labs\, academic institutions\, DOE representatives\, other key national associations\, industrial recyclers\, etc.?\nHow can we leverage the existing capabilities of ACC members\, automotive and industrial stakeholders\, national labs\, academic institutions\, DOE representatives\, other key national associations\, industrial recyclers\, etc.to circumvent barriers?\n\nTo help answer these questions\, the American Chemistry Council and Oak Ridge National Lab recently signed a 5-year Memorandum of Understanding that will seek to identify and develop\, and eventually demonstrate\, end of life and full circularity solutions for durable plastics through an automotive industry lens. This work will include development of a pilot sorting and separation line and include both traditional mechanical and advanced recycling technology applications. \nThis event will serve as an initial kickoff these efforts\, including having a goal of developing a solid agreement with input from all stakeholders on what the first-year statement of work will include\, and what subsequent years may look like for goals and objectives. Hosted at Oak Ridge National Laboratory\, this free and open to the public event includes in-person and virtual attendance options.  Representatives from academic institutions\, national laboratories\, chemical manufacturers\, fiber manufacturers\, automotive manufacturers\, end users\, ELV recyclers\, investment firms\, and the Department of Energy (DOE) will benefit from participating. These Level 2 systems\, such as Autopilot and Super Cruise\, are becoming more advanced but still require constant supervision by the driver. The challenge is keeping drivers engaged while using these systems. Driver monitoring systems should help this situation but might be encouraging the wrong behavior because of some of the current implementations. \nJoin AAA National\, Consumer Reports\, and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) on February 16\, at 1 PM Eastern to learn about the current state of the technology\, the latest testing of these systems\, and to hear about updated testing standards still under development.
