SUMMARY:Durable Automotive Plastics Circularity Working Meeting 2022
DESCRIPTION:The automotive industry has grown significantly during the last decade\, with the total number of registered vehicles in developed countries growing consistently by on average 4% per year. [1\, 2] The global automotive industry was valued at $3.6T in 2021\, even considering the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. [3] However\, the automotive sector generates 5% of global industrial waste which if not handled properly can be classified as hazardous waste. [2]  Recycling of end-of-life vehicles at shredder plants ends up with huge amounts of waste residue\, for which the complex recycling route is still missing. Automotive shredder residue (ASR) is often called light fraction\, because after the separation of all the metal particles it contains mostly non-metallic materials like plastics\, rubber\, wood\, paper\, textile\, leather or glass – a complex mixture of materials known as automotive shredder residue (ASR). To enable circularity for ELVs\, the environmental and economic benefit of recycled material content must be quantified\, and separation and sorting pathways must be developed and industrialized. To do so\, several questions will need to be answered: \n\nWhat are the options to eliminate disposal of ELV durable plastics\, such as composites\, and ASR?\nWhat is the potential environmental and economic value of currently unrecycled vehicle content?\nIn addition to technical challenges\, why isn’t recycling yet at cost parity with landfilling?\nWhat is the U.S. DOE’s perspective on this problem and what do they plan to do about it?\nWhat are people doing about this right now?  What solutions exist?\nWhat known and forthcoming barriers exist to recycling of durable plastics in automotive?\n\nTechnical barriers (i.e.\, durable plastics in ELVs aren’t designed to be recycled)\nSupply chain limitations (i.e.\, not yet enough waste to supply any significant industry)\nInfrastructure limitations (i.e. lack of sorting\, separation\, recycling facilities and collection solutions)\nOthers\, to be identified in the meeting\n\n\nWhat are the capabilities of ACC members\, automotive and industrial stakeholders\, national labs\, academic institutions\, DOE representatives\, other key national associations\, industrial recyclers\, etc.?\nHow can we leverage the existing capabilities of ACC members\, automotive and industrial stakeholders\, national labs\, academic institutions\, DOE representatives\, other key national associations\, industrial recyclers\, etc.to circumvent barriers?\n\nTo help answer these questions\, the American Chemistry Council and Oak Ridge National Lab recently signed a 5-year Memorandum of Understanding that will seek to identify and develop\, and eventually demonstrate\, end of life and full circularity solutions for durable plastics through an automotive industry lens. This work will include development of a pilot sorting and separation line and include both traditional mechanical and advanced recycling technology applications. \nThis event will serve as an initial kickoff these efforts\, including having a goal of developing a solid agreement with input from all stakeholders on what the first-year statement of work will include\, and what subsequent years may look like for goals and objectives. Hosted at Oak Ridge National Laboratory\, this free and open to the public event includes in-person and virtual attendance options.  Representatives from academic institutions\, national laboratories\, chemical manufacturers\, fiber manufacturers\, automotive manufacturers\, end users\, ELV recyclers\, investment firms\, and the Department of Energy (DOE) will benefit from participating.
