Alice Schoonbroodt is an Assistant Professor in Economics at the University of Iowa. She lives with her family in Coralville, Iowa. She is originally from Eupen, making her one of the rare German Speaking Belgians in the US.
She came here in 2000 to study for her PHD at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. Her area of expertise is the interconnections between demographics and growth. She is passionate about how the economic environment affects fertility and other demographics choices and how those affect the macro-economy in return.
As she was attending a conference on Economics at the University of Iowa, she met Martin Gervais, another researcher in Economics. They met at a few other conferences and started falling in love. Soon after they started dating, Martin asked her if she wanted to marry him on the 07/07/2007. Understanding he was serious, she joked around saying “Ok, but only if it is on a Saturday!” The odds were one out of seven after all… It turned out that the 07/07/2007 was indeed on a Saturday. They got married on the Canadian Side of the Niagara falls (Martin comes from Quebec).
Upon her graduation at the University of Minnesota in 2006, Alice got a job offer at the University of Southampton in the UK. Martin followed her and found employment at the same university. They lived in England for about 5 years during which they had a hard time with the English Customer Service (both had lived a long time in the US). They say that everything in England takes very long time. One day, their internet service had been down for a couple weeks. Exasperated, Martin called their provider and threatened to cancel their plan. The technical support agent transferred him to... the cancellation department! In 2011, they were offered a great opportunity at the University of Iowa. They moved back to the United States and were able to find a great home in Coralville where they still live.
Alice pro-actively works on her research and submits her papers to economics journals. Publishing a paper is not like writing a blog post. Every article involves years of research and hard work. It can also be stressful. There is a race against the clock element involved. Sometimes you can be the first one to make a discovery, but someone gets published before you.
Alice hopes to be tenured at the University of Iowa in a couple years. Tenure in the Higher Education System is a permanent job contract, granted after a probationary period that varies for every Institution.
Besides being a brilliant scholar, Alice is the proud mother of Michelle. Michelle was born during the Summer of 2013 and really brings a lot of happiness and joy to the family. You can find out about her adorable little girl by clicking on her own signature.
