Alex is the other person behind SignMyCar! Born and raised in Kansas, nothing predicted that he would be dragged into a Belgian Storytelling Tour, until his car broke down one night in December 2014.
Alex was attending a board game meetup that night and walked back to the building to ask the nearest table for help.
- I need someone to help jump my car.
- "You need someone to jump on your car"?, I asking as I had heard him
Alex looked at me, thinking I was just being silly, and decided to address the rest of the attendees, who might offer better help. Everyone else just looks at each other sheepishly, not being able to help.
- No one has any jumper cables?, Alex asks
- Oh, Jumper Cables!!! I know what those are! I do have Jumper Cables!, I say
Alex had no other options than going with the Belgian Stranger Danger...
So I pulled my car with its gigantic Belgian flag and signatures next to his. Needless to say, the car-to-be-signed made an impression. We spent the next hour trying to jump his car. The only thing started though was a conversation. Alex called AAA roadside assistance.
- You seem to having quite a day. Let me offer you a Belgian Beer to cheer you up! I say.
I invited him to the nearest pub and we had a good beer. I told him all about how I had just quit my job to travel the US to hunt Belgian signatures and make a documentary about it.
His first impression was that I was crazy European adventurer bravely living my way across the face of the Earth. My first impression was that he seemed lost and lacked drive. This was not love at first sight. But it was integrity at first sight for sure.
After our strong encounter, I did the most logical thing to do with someone you met the week before. I invited Alex to spend New Years 14 in Chicago! He first pretended to not notice my text but then understood that I was serious. He decided it was time for a crazy adventure and said yes. Nothing better than traveling with a stranger for New Years!
That is the story on how love did happen...
Alex comes from a family of entrepreneurs. His parents started a concrete sealer company when he was a kid. He grew up seeing his parents going through the highs and lows of running a business. Alex has contributed to Seal Green in many ways and has become a seasoned entrepreneur himself. He loves talking about entrepreneurship and has a great intuition to detect shenanigans! He has ideas about how small businesses can run efficiently and contribute to society at the same time. His advices are really spot on and valuable.
Alex is passionate about understanding complex systems. He pursed Mathematics, Physics and Robotics for many years. He is also fascinated by architecture and human psychology. When his mind grasps a new concept, he can suddenly write mathematic formula on his mirror, note book, whatever is available around him. He sees the world in motion as a whole. Mathematics, psychology and informatics are just one side of the same thing for him. Alex's ability to connect and analyze information that most people can't see connected gives him a very unique set of skills and perspective on life. Alex could have become a typical Kansas Boy, but his story made him see outside of the box. You can't judge someone from their nationality or language. It is their story that matters the most. That is why it is necessary to meet one person as if it was the first person we meet.
Alex also enjoys arts, especially drawing and photography. But he really can't stand modern conceptual art. It puts him in a very bad mood. It is actually hilarious to see though...
Now Alex has become my best friend and my partner in life. Alex helps me deal with the stress and incertitudes of SignMyCar! and give me lots of valuable advices every day. He is really patient and supportive. He deals almost daily with the way I always get lost; always break down my mower; and always complain about the Kansas City. Down the road, he would like to relocate as well. But for now, Kansas City will do.
